The liaison committee on medical education (LCME) determines whether an institution or program meets standards for structure, function and performance of a medical school. Medical education programs leading to an M.D. degree are accredited by the LCME. (*Osteopathic medical schools are not accredited by the LCME)

Obtaining State Medical Licenses
As the process of obtaining medical licenses becomes more arduous for physicians, it is important for a locum tenens physician to think strategically about how many and which state licenses to apply for. A locum tenens agency will assist with these applications before an assignment. No two states have the same process for medical licesnes. Some states will complete the application within a few weeks, others will take months. The fees also vary, ranging from less than $100 to over $1,000. All states usually request basic information to verify your education, training and practice history. Some states require fingerprints, a written exam or even an in-person interview. For more information about each state’s requirements visit each medical board’s website.
- Keep a file of photocopies of diplomas, certificates, CME records, malpractice history and licenses from other states
- Offer as much detail as possible for each verification or reference for credentialing staff
- Keep all licenses active as most boards require starting the process over if the license becomes inactive or expired
- Notify each state of any change in address, name or other contact information
