According to a recent Mayo Clinic study, more than half of U.S. doctors have suffered from burnout, and The American Medical Association has even called it a “top physician issue.”
Physician burnout usually starts with exhaustion and can spiral down into feelings of cynicism, loss of enthusiasm, low sense of personal accomplishment—or even depression and suicide.
While burnout affects all specialties, it can affect some worse than others. The top three medical specialties experiencing burnout the most are: emergency medicine, Ob/gyn, family medicine, internal medicine, and infectious disease.
