Survey Shows 1 in 3 Physicians Plans to Leave the Practice Over the Next Decade

34% of physicians say they plan to leave medicine over the next decade due to low compensation and the hassles of healthcare reform. The survey, conducted by Atlanta-based Jackson Healthcare, showed responses of 2,218 physicians and also found that 16% of the respondents said they will or are strongly considering retiring, leaving medicine, or going part-time in 2012.

Of the physicians who stated they planned to leave or retire:

  • 56% cited economic factors
  • 51% cited health reform
  • 55% were under the age of 55
